Urban Stop-and-go Traffic Optimization
We conducted a R&D effort with US Department of Energy Vehicle Technologies Office, focused on system-wide energy efficiency improvements for transport of goods and people. We focused on Urban stop-and-go operations for electric vehicles, where kinetic energy is wasted at every deceleration. While regenerative braking recovers part of it, an efficient velocity schedule would have avoided the loss at the source. As it turned out, the gap between what a fleet currently consumes and what physics allows is real, measurable, and recoverable through software alone.
